Tennis shines as Australia’s 2022 Google sports search trends are revealed

In a year of global news, the sport has once again caught the interest of Australians.

And of all the major sports in the country, tennis has dominated in 2022.

Google has released its annual Year in Search report, which summarizes and ranks what Aussies have searched for online.

Last year’s trends saw the nation captivated by the NBA while the AFL dominated domestic search trends.

However, 2022 was a different story.

Note: Search trends indicate the searches that had “the highest traffic increase over a sustained period of time” in 2022 compared to 2021, not the highest overall search volume.

When Australians weren’t busy completing their daily wordle, they were keeping up with the Australian Tennis Open and the 2022 World Cup.

The shocking death of cricketer Shane Warne ranks fourth on the list, while Novak Djokovic’s deportation drama has garnered a lot of online attention.

Further down the rankings, the first men’s Ashes series since 2019 was driving too much search traffic, along with the now-retired Ash Barty, who claimed her first-ever Australian Open title.

According to the “Total Searches” ranking, the Australian Open achieves first place in this year’s sport category.

The event is usually hugely popular but its prominence was boosted this year by performances by local talent, with Ash Barty (women’s singles) and Thanasis Kokkinkais and Nick Kyrgios (men’s doubles) taking titles.

The Winter Olympics – in which Australia won four medals – and the Rugby League World Cup – which Australia won – were also in the top five.

It’s also evident that the Australian Open isn’t the only tennis event the Aussies are interested in, with the Indian Wells and ATP Cup tournaments both trending in 2022.

Tennis is once again proving its power as a trending sport in the 2022 Aussies rankings, with Ash Barty and Nick Kyrgios occupying the top two spots (higher than the nation’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese).

They are followed by Kyrgios’ doubles partner Thanasis Kokkinakis alongside Australian of the Year and wheelchair tennis legend Dylan Alcott.

Notably, the five sports stars in this list are all tennis players.

Surprise, surprise… Tennis dominates the top trending list of the “Global Figures” again this year.

Novak Djokovic – who made some headlines in 2022 – is on the podium alongside Australian Open finalists Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev.

The only other sports (and tennis) player to complete the list was Danielle Collins, who lost to local hero Ash Barty in the women’s final at Melbourne Park.
