A tennis player was left in shock after being disqualified from an ATP Tour event for showering during a toilet break. American Nicolas Moreno De Alboran said he turned on the shower to remove sand from his body, which had caused a rash in the scorching heat.
At the Sevilla Challenger tournament, he was followed to the toilet by Federico Delbonis, who informed officials of his opponent’s unauthorized shower break, which resulted in Alboran being kicked out of the competition. A statement was later posted by Alboran on Instagram, which said: “In the second set I fell over 3/4 times. One of them got sand into my underwear.
“I had to play like that for 30 minutes and got a rash that started bleeding after a while. When I won the second set, I went to the bathroom to change (you have five minutes).
“When I saw that I didn’t get the sand off with the towel because I was sweating so much. I decided to use the shower handle to just rinse off the sand.

“My opponent told the referee who came to the toilet with us that I took a shower (which you are not allowed to do). The tournament referee then excluded me from the tournament. In addition, I will not receive any points or prize money from the tournament and will have to pay for my hotel room for the days that I have participated in the tournament.
“It has nothing to do with the tournament or its organization, which has been incredible all week.” The first-round match of the clay court tournament was finely balanced to one set at a time at the time of the incident. Argentina’s Delbonis had won the first set 7-5, but Alboran won the second 7-6 after a tiebreak that ended 8-6.
