Craig Eastmond’s added-time winner handed Gillingham, the Football League’s basement club, a painful defeat at Sutton United.
The visitors were heading for part of the points until Eastmond’s dramatic goal came in the third minute of added time.
Sutton had taken the lead two minutes before the break through an Elkan Baggott own goal, with Robbie McKenzie leveling with 12 minutes remaining.
The visitors had the best early chances, but Dom Jefferies headed wide from close range after a beautiful cross from Alex MacDonald.
Sutton keeper Jack Rose then batted away a long-range shot from Callum Harriott.
Gillingham put Sutton ahead in the 43rd minute when Baggott converted the ball into his own net after Omar Bugiel headed Eastmond’s spot-on delivery back over the goal.
Eastmond then came close with a 25-yard try that flew over.
Mikael Mandron almost equalized when he twisted Jefferies’ cross wide, but the Gills equalized when McKenzie fired home.
There was a final twist, however, as Eastmond stunned away fans with a strike from the edge of the box, but the Gills remain three points from safety after Colchester lost to Wimbledon at home.
