Sue Bird on Celtics icon Bill Russell’s influence on basketball and the sport in Seattle

A little over a year ago, the basketball community mourned the loss of Bill Russell, a revered figure in the history of the sport and civil rights, and evoked a mixture of sadness and appreciation. Known herself as a game-changing star on the court, WNBA luminary Sue Bird reflected on Russell’s death and its profound impact on the game and the world in a recent interview with Landon Buford.

“When Bill Russell passed, it was incredibly sad, but also a wonderful moment to remember all that he did for the sport of basketball,” said Bird. “On the pitch the world, off the pitch in the truest sense of the word and then definitely the city of Seattle.” He was a mainstay here too and supported the storm.”

“It was always wonderful to see him at games (Seattle Storm) and just his face,” added the former UConn legend.
