KIDDER COUNTY, ND (KFYR) – Earning college letters wasn’t a problem for Kidder County’s Kennedy Harter. She’s been doing it there since she was in elementary school.
For a Grade B school like Kidder County, having an athlete like Kennedy Harter available is immense. Ever since she started in the 8th grade, she has been a huge spark for the Wolves basketball team.
“Kennedy is entering her fifth year as a starter for me. With its size and length, it has been a kind of rock in the middle in recent years. What she’s really focusing on this year is vocal guidance in practice,” said Kidder County head coach Dan Welder.
“In terms of defence, I’m a real ‘after-the-go’ player. I can be anywhere I can protect the best player, I can help everyone on the pitch. Attacking, I’m the big one on the pitch, I see everything, see open shooters, inside-out game,” said Harter.
Not only does she excel at basketball, she also plays volleyball for the Wolves and is a three-time state champion in the triple jump. Her athleticism and competitiveness stem from a source to which she is closely related.
“I grew up with three brothers, so it helps to be competitive and always want to beat them at everything. They definitely help me be aggressive in the post because they’re not nice. So it’s very helpful to be aggressive and only see new things that they notice. Everything is a competition, so assignments, playing outside, everything – I have to beat them,” Harter said.
Kennedy not only contributes at both ends of the parquet. It’s her personality that makes her such an important part of this team.
“Kennedy is always full of jokes. She always smiles. If you’re having a bad day, she’ll always ask what’s going on and she’s always there for you if you need her. If you’re having a bad day, she’ll always tell you a joke and make sure you’re okay,” said Kidder County senior Avery Rath.
“For the team, I think I bring a really fun energy and always make everyone laugh. It’s also a big part of my role,” Harter said.
Kennedy is still weighing her college options. She is considering the state of North Dakota and has had a few visits to the University of North Dakota for athletics. She has also spoken to Jamestown and U-Mary about playing both basketball and track.
