Sport Ireland today announced it has committed €15 million to national sports federations.
A number of criteria have been identified as key priorities for 2023 – diversity and inclusion, improved governance and greater gender balance.
NGBs must have at least 40% women on their boards by the end of 2023.
A 15% cut in IABA’s core funding for 2022 has been implemented.
Paul McDermott, Director of High Performance & National Governing Bodies at Sport Ireland, said there is an ongoing dialogue with IABA and proposals are expected from them on governance reforms in the coming weeks.
On July 11, Secretary of State Jack Chambers confirmed that all state funding for boxing would be cut – except for funds earmarked for athletes in the High Performance Unit – after IABA members voted overwhelmingly against the proposed governance reforms had voted.
Sport Ireland’s Chief Executive, Dr. Una May says she is working to provide guidance to the sector on the participation of transgender athletes in sport.
dr May said: “We published a call for tenders last month. I suppose that the fact that we didn’t receive any tenders is a testament to the complexity of this area. It’s a very, very difficult area and we want to provide support and guidance where we can only acknowledge that international federations are the ones who set the rules for the sport in general.”
She added that Sport Ireland hope to be able to support the governing bodies here in implementing their international federations’ guidelines.
