‘SPORT FOR HEALING FUND’ ESTABLISHED TO PROVIDE MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES AND SAFE SPACE TO PLAY FOR YOUTH OF UVALDE
NBA, Dallas Mavericks, Dallas Stars, Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs unite to fund long-term mental health and counseling services in safe spaces for young people
SAN ANTONIO (June 22, 2022) – Members of the Texas and national professional sports communities join efforts to create the Sport for Healing Fund. The fund will provide long term support to the Uvalde community by creating and investing in trauma and healing centered care for youth and families. The National Basketball Association (NBA), Dallas Mavericks, Dallas Stars, Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs join forces to provide initial funding for the Sport for Healing Fund.
Efforts will be anchored around sports and building safer places, such as Spurs Sports & Entertainment (SS&E) manages the fund jointly with the San Antonio Area Foundation, which will distribute the investments in the community of Uvalde. Fans who wish to join the Texas and national sports community by contributing to the fund are invited to donate here.
“The community of Uvalde will forever be grateful for the generous partnerships that have been formed to pay tribute to and remember our loved ones,” said Rob Fowler, City of Uvalde Parks and Recreation Director. “We recognize that the road to psychological recovery from this traumatic event is a long one. However, the youth of our community are being healed with the support of our local and national sports community. Physical spaces for healing and resources for mental health care are critical to the recovery of our beloved Uvalde community.”
Childhood trauma is a pervasive public health problem across the country. By providing both physical spaces for healing and free resources to children and adults in the Uvalde community, programming through the fund will help reduce the stigma of mental health issues and narrow the gap between sport and healing.
Katie Edwards, Senior Vice President of External Affairs, Dallas Mavericks:
“The Dallas Mavericks are here for the community of Uvalde. We are proud to come together with our friends in the NBA and across sport as a united front to provide mental health resources and safe spaces to help Uvalde’s youth thrive and thrive.”
Brad Alberts, Dallas Stars President and CEO:
“The Dallas Stars are proud to partner with the Spurs, Mavericks and Rockets to provide mental health resources to the Uvalde community. We firmly believe that access to trauma- and healing-centered care will have a lasting and meaningful impact on the families and children affected by the inexplicable events of May 24th.”
Gretchen Sheirr, President of Business Operations, Houston Rockets:
“The Fertitta family and the Houston Rockets organization are heartbroken at the senseless loss of life over the past month. We are honored to join the Spurs, Mavericks and Stars in helping bring healing to this broken Texas community.”
dr Kara C. Allen, Chief Impact Officer, Spurs Sports & Entertainment:
“As is true for so many communities in the United States that have experienced mass shootings, the road to recovery for our neighbors and family in Uvalde is long. Our role as a united sports family is to use our knowledge to give the community what it needs. Bigger than professional sports and team alliances, we can and must put healing first together. Our future together depends on it.”
