Nathan Patterson was due to make his first Premier League start for Everton at the weekend
Nathan Patterson, along with fellow defender Kieran Tierney, is doubtful through injury in Scotland’s World Cup semi-final play-off against Ukraine.
Everton manager Frank Lampard says right-back Patterson’s season is ‘possibly’ over after suffering an injury at the training ground which requires surgery.
It follows Monday’s news that Arsenal’s Tierney “doesn’t look good” after picking up a knee injury at Scotland.
“Nathan Patterson will be out for a period,” said Lampard.
“He will have minor surgery on his ankle later this week.”
After impressing for Scotland in friendlies against Poland and Austria, Patterson was expected to start for Everton for the first time in the Premier League against West Ham last weekend, having played just 45 minutes for his new club since the 20-year-old in January Moving from Rangers.
Tierney also featured in his country’s last two games before missing against Crystal Palace and club manager Mikel Arteta, Sky Sports told Monday: “He came back from international duty and felt something wrong in his knee.
“There is some damage there. Hopefully we’ll know more on Tuesday but it’s not looking good.
“He’s at the specialist on Tuesday and we’ll know more about the extent of the injury but the feeling he had wasn’t really positive and that’s what the scan showed.”
Scotland are expected to meet Ukraine in the delayed semifinals in early June.
Ukraine’s visit to Hampden Park, originally scheduled for last week, has been postponed due to the Russian invasion of the country.
The winners of that match meet Wales in a one-off match to advance to the finals in Qatar, which begins in November.
While Patterson has recently usurped Motherwell’s Stephen O’Donnell as first choice, 24-year-old Tierney is a fixture in Steve Clarke’s side, usually playing on the left side of a back three, while Liverpool captain Andy Robertson plays at left-back acts .
