Roma 3-4 Juventus: Mattia De Sciglio makes a dramatic comeback for Juve

The win moved six points ahead of Roma in the Serie A standings to fifth in Juventus

Jose Mourinho said his Roma side suffered a “psychological breakdown” after conceding three goals in seven minutes in the Juventus loss.

Roma had led 3-1 with 20 minutes remaining before Juve’s impressive comeback was celebrated.

Romas Lorenzo Pellegrini also saved a late penalty from Wojciech Szczesny after Matthijs de Ligt received a second yellow card for handball.

“We played very well for 70 minutes, but after that it was a psychological breakdown,” Mourinho told DAZN.

“If you’re in trouble, you should get up again and show what you’ve got, but here in the locker room there are people who are a little too nice, a little too weak.”

Mourinho’s side, which started Ainsley Maitland-Niles for the first time, took the 11th-minute lead when Tammy Abraham Jordan Veretout’s corner nodded off the post for his 14th goal in all competitions this season.

Just before the break, Paulo Dybala equalized for Juve with a guided shot from the edge of the box into the corner.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan restored Roma leadership early in the second half when his long-range shot was deflected by Daniele Rugani and flown over Szczesny before Pellegrini rolled a stunning 25-yard free kick into the top corner to seemingly heading for the home side bring a comfortable victory.

However, Juve’s comeback began in the 70th minute when Manuel Locatelli headed an Alvaro Morata cross from six meters.

Two minutes later, substitute Dejan Kulusevski saw his shot from close range initially excluded due to offside, but the decision was reversed after a long video assistant referee check.

Defender Mattia De Sciglio then caused delirium among the visiting players when he drilled the winner from the penalty area into the lower corner.

There was still time for more drama in the last 10 minutes when center-back De Ligt was sent off for a second bookable violation after parrying Abraham’s shot with his arm in the box.

Pellegrini took the penalty, but Szczesny guessed the right direction and kept the ball clear.

The win keeps Juventus in fifth place and three points behind Atalantawho finished fourth in the last Champions League placement after beating Udinese 6-2. Roma remains in eighth place.
