Star Hammer Thrower is Cal’s third track athlete to receive honor
BERKELEY – For only the third time in history, a Californian athlete has been named as one of four finalists for the Honda Sport Award for Track & Field, presented each year to the sport’s top female athlete. Camryn Rogers, who recently won her third straight NCAA Hammer title and broke the collegiate record for the fifth time of her career, is the only pitcher on the list, which also includes Anna Hall (Florida, heptathlon), Jasmine Moore ( Florida, jumps) and Abby Steiner (Kentucky, sprints).
“It’s a great honor for Camryn,” said assistant coach Mohamad Saatara, who directs the shots. “It’s a testament to her ability as a competitor at the highest levels of the sport.”
Rogers is the only Golden Bear ever nominated for the Track & Field Honda Award, along with Alysia Johnson (2008) and Chelsea Johnson (2006); A total of 19 Cal athletes have been recognized in 12 sports since the 2000-01 season.
The winner of this year’s award will be added to a pool of finalists for the prestigious Honda Cup, which recognizes the best female collegiate athlete of the year and will be presented June 27 at 6:00 p.m. PT on CBS Sports Network.
Although Rogers is done throwing the hammer for Cal, she will return to Eugene’s Hayward Field as a representative of Team Canada at the IAAF World Championships in just a month. The women’s Hammer Qualifier will be held on July 15 at 12:05 p.m. PT, followed by the Finals on July 17 at 11:35 a.m
