Victoria Esson’s save denied Celtic a late win in Cumbernauld
Rangers remain at the top of Scotland’s women’s Premier League after a thrilling goalless draw in their first derby of the season against city rivals Celtic.
Visiting goalkeeper Pamela Tajonar made a series of brilliant saves to keep her side just a point behind the reigning champions.
Rangers have now held back-to-back draws against their two title rivals.
But Glasgow City can overtake both city rivals with a win in their derby with fourth-placed Partick Thistle on Sunday.
A lack of end products hampered Rangers as they dominated the ball early on against Celtic and Tajonar had to stretch to tip a 30-yard sizzler from full-back Nicola Docherty over the bar.
After the break, Standard set-piece specialist Tessel Middag cracked a free-kick off the Celtic post.
And when the midfielder’s free-kick landed on Hannah Davison’s head to give the unmarked defender the best opportunity of the game, the expectant Broadwood crowd watched as it was deflected wide from five yards out.
Celtic captain Caitlin Hayes almost stole all three points for her side when centre-back Victoria Esson forced a fine stop as she headed towards goal from a wicked corner.
