With safe, welcoming, inclusive and fun experiences at its heart, Australia’s sport participation strategy is a unified approach with the vision that “everyone has a place in sport”.
The new strategy and Play Well ethos complement Australia’s High Performance Sports Strategy 2032+, which is based on creating an environment in which athletes and sports can win well.
Creating great sporting environments and experiences is at the heart of the strategy, which focuses on bringing people of all ages, backgrounds, genders and abilities together to reap the benefits of sport.
To mark today’s launch, the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), with support from the Australian Government, has launched a $10.3 million Play Well Participation Grant program to kick-start this exciting new era.
ASC CEO Kieren Perkins OAM is a member of the strategy’s Project Steering Group, which oversaw the development of the strategy and said it was a pivotal moment for Australian sport.
“Sport is important to so many Australians, but our experiences with sport vary greatly,” Mr Perkins said.
“We have listened to the system and recognize that the sport needs to change to make everyone feel welcome.
“We recognize that providing community sport is becoming increasingly difficult. There are few opportunities to play sports, especially in regional areas, and the current sports system is often too structured, discouraging participants.
“By working together we can overcome some of the obstacles and challenges and build a stronger Australia.”
