Two of cricket's leading talent management agencies have joined forces in a deal that will see TGI Sport, a private equity-backed sports marketing company, acquire Insignia Sports International.

Insignia, based at The Oval in London and led by founder Eddie Tolchard, has grown into a major global agency over the last decade, representing many of the sport's best players, particularly in men's T20 cricket. These include Rashid Khan, Nicholas Pooran, Jofra Archer and Sunil Narine.

They also represent a number of high-profile coaches including Brendon McCullum, Simon Katich, Matthew Mott and Daren Sammy, and have a broadcasting department. Together, Insignia and TGI represent around 240 active players and 40 coaches.

Insignia was purchased by TGI Sport, a company jointly owned by private equity firms Bruin Capital and Quadrant Private Equity, whose cricket management business is also known as TLA Worldwide. They represent a significant number of Australian and English cricketers, including Harry Brook, Aaron Finch and Danni Wyatt, and also work in event management with the ICC and key bodies.

“We see TGI Sport as a natural fit to advance Insignia and strengthen our offering,” said Martin Jolly, the company’s global CEO. “By adding Insignia’s talent to our existing client list, TGI Sport will become the world’s leading cricket talent agency. This will maximize our presence in a sport where we are deeply involved through player representation, commercial partnerships, media and technology.”

Phil Weston, the former Derbyshire, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire batsman and head of cricket at TGI, said: “We are merging two of the world's most significant cricket talent companies, which will bring both an unprecedented and unprecedented impact to the clients we represent will provide opportunities.” outside of the field.

The merger comes at a time when players and their agents are consolidating their influence in the global game, as the recent proliferation of franchise leagues – many of which overlap – drives up wages and increases demand for player services. Five T20 men's leagues are running simultaneously this week in Australia, Bangladesh, New Zealand, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates.

The proportion of professional players represented by agents has increased significantly over the last decade and cricketers are increasingly aware of their value. This has also been demonstrated by FICA, the global players' union, which recently signed a ground-breaking agreement with Winners Alliance that aims to resolve long-standing issues surrounding image rights.

Tolchard said: “Insignia has always been a customer-focused company that prides itself on being a leader in international cricket management. The landscape in which we operate is changing at a rapid pace, which means the service and expertise that elite cricketers provide.” The people they have to surround themselves with are also evolving.

“Combining what we already have with the additional support and resources of global powerhouse TGI Sport will ensure we can continue to provide a first-class, forward-thinking and proactive service that enables our customers to succeed. It’s a very exciting time for everyone involved.”
