Patricia Urquiola & Kvadrat Sport is the first recycled upholstery fabric

Patricia Urquiola and Kvadrat have teamed up to launch the world's first upholstery fabric made entirely from recycled materials.

The Milan designer and the Danish Textile Authority worked with plastic waste from the sea and created sport in collaboration with #tide, a Swiss company specializing in the development of materials from plastic waste from the sea. The textile is made from post-consumer plastic collected within 10km of the coast of Thailand. This is part of #tide's commitment to prevent the materials from ending up in the oceans.

'[With Kvadrat]“We share the same philosophy that the highest standards in design and materials can be combined with important sustainable and ethical measures,” says #tide co-founder Marc Krebs. '[We both] “We want to create a much-needed social and environmental impact that protects the oceans and supports coastal and island communities in their fight against plastic pollution from 100 percent ocean-bound plastic waste.”

As the name suggests, the collection is inspired by sportswear and references a high-tech aesthetic, with subtle tactile patterns enriching the surface and a color palette characterized by vibrant purples, greens and blues, as well as a range of neutrals Colors are defined from gray to taupe. Each textile features a two-tone contrasting composition that enhances the three-dimensional effect of the design. “The colors for Sport are divided into monochrome “salt and pepper” shades that highlight the high-tech graphic nature of the textile and monochromatic shades that fade its texture,” explains Urquiola.
