CHAPEL HILL — The board of directors for the NC High School Athletic Association on Tuesday completed its first spring meeting since the association finalized a letter of intent with the state board of education.
These are some highlights of the Board’s actions at the meeting:
• Added girls’ wrestling as an individual championship sport for the 2023-2024 athletics year. The NCHSAA has sponsored an invitational girls’ wrestling championship for two years and will do so again in 2022-23 before becoming a fully sanctioned sport.
• Added a separate 4-A classification for the girls’ lacrosse playoffs for the 2022-2023 track and field year. Teams from all four classifications are currently competing in an open tournament.
• Approved a five quarters rule for basketball, allowing ninth and tenth graders to attend five quarters of the game in a single day between varsity and junior varsity games. This was done to promote and sustain junior varsity programs statewide and will be a three-year pilot program.

• Approved a 5 percent distribution of interest income from the Association’s general endowment fund to member schools, including a 5.05 percent distribution from the Education/Health and Safety Endowment Fund.
• Approved membership dues remain at $1 per student for 2022-2023. The Board eliminated a $100 administration fee that had been billed to all member schools, also effective 2022-2023.
• The NCHSAA revenue share was changed to 20 percent for all fourth-round playoff competitions in all team and bracket sports. Under the new LOI, the association will receive its share of all rounds from the net earnings of all playoffs and championships, rather than gross earnings.
Concluding the meeting, NCHSAA Commissioner Que Tucker said, “Today was a landmark meeting for the NCHSAA in many ways. As we celebrate 50 years since the passage of Title IX, our board was able to approve a new women’s sport, women’s wrestling, and add a new championship classification in women’s lacrosse.
