Miracle League brings the community together

DUBLIN, Ohio – America’s favorite pastime requires just a few essentials – bat, ball, glove and, of course, chewing gum.

For Joe Schroeder, it also includes a game of catch to warm up between his friend Brian and his father Jim.

Joe and Brian have been playing together for 10 years. Just as long, Joe has participated in the Miracle League of Central Ohio, a baseball league for adults with disabilities. Joe is the thrower, but his goal isn’t to beat his opponents.

“Joe knows it’s not about that and he does his best to help the other players hit the ball and I spoke to him about it and said why are you doing that? He said because I want them to have fun too and that’s why I’m really proud of him,” said Joe’s father Jim.

He’s also proud of what this organization stands for and encourages others to come out and watch a game.

“It will remind you what sport is all about, the thrill and joy of competition. It’s not about winning or losing, it’s about going out and having a good time and doing your best,” Jim said.

For Joe, his best bet is to hit it out of the park and be the best cheerleader for his teammates.

Miracle League volunteer and PA spokesman Adam Beatrice said that kind of camaraderie is what it’s all about.

“It brings a community together or people who like baseball and players who want to play, have common interests, just come out and have a few hours of fun on a Tuesday or Thursday night.”

And have fun doing it.
