Make sure your child is safe during sports week

Friday, October 6, 2023

This week is Keeping Your Child Safe in Sport Week, organized by the Department of Child Protection in Sport.

The unit is committed to helping parents understand the role they can play in keeping their children safe in sports. As its work continues throughout the year, the organization wants to draw attention to important points this week.

Themes for this year are:

Be included
Parents and carers play an important role in influencing their child’s enjoyment and experience of sport through their feedback, actions and support.

Not all children need the same commitment from their parents or carers.

How involved do they want you to be and how can you get involved in their sporting journey?

Be supportive
Sports can be an emotional experience for children, their adults and coaches.

Feedback from parents and carers has a huge impact on how a child perceives their abilities, enjoys their sport and feels motivated to continue participating.

Ensure the safety of children
It is important that parents and carers have the confidence to express any concerns or concerns they may have about their child’s sports club or activity.

Asking questions about safeguarding policies and procedures should also be commonplace.

The campaign has resources to help you provide this knowledge, including information on choosing a safe club, a video and an e-learning module on its parent hub.
