Liam Hampson: Queensland rugby league player found dead in Spain | rugby league

Redcliffe Queensland Cup player Liam Hampson has been found dead on a trip to Spain at the end of the season. The dummy half were on holiday with a group of NRL players including Gold Coast star AJ Brimson and Brisbane’s Jordan Riki and Jesse Arthars.

The 24-year-old first became concerned when Arthars and others posted on social media that he had not been seen for 24 hours after he was last seen at Sala Apolo nightclub.

Barcelona police confirmed to 7 News Thursday morning AEDT that a body believed to be that of Hampson was found on the floor of a nightclub, believed to have fallen from a considerable height.

His father, Brett, confirmed Hampson’s death on social media.

“Waking up to the news that no one wants to hear, we are devastated to learn that Liam had an accident and sadly did not survive,” he wrote on Facebook.

“We are heartbroken, to say the least. Liam had a heart of gold and was a beloved son, brother, grandson, uncle and friend. Words cannot express our sadness.

“We can’t thank his buddies enough for being with Liam, having the time of his life and helping to find our boy. Our thoughts are with them.

“We ask the media to respect our privacy as we work through this period.”

Previously, Arthar posted on social media that Hampson had not been spotted in a black T-shirt and tan shorts since 4:30 a.m. on Oct. 18.

“…could not be contacted and no one has seen him for 24 hours…was with a group and very atypical…” he said.

“…this is very scary for all of us…” Riki said in a repost.

Hampson had played in the Queensland Cup for four years and joined Redcliffe from Tweed Head Seagulls in late 2021.

He came off the bench in last month’s Queensland Cup big final loss to the Norths Devils and was able to impress Wayne Bennett and the NRL’s 17th franchise at the Dolphins.
