Leicester 0-0 Crystal Palace: Goalless draw keeps the pressure on a beleaguered Brendan Rodgers

Leicester remain in the Premier League relegation zone after the shutout

Leicester City failed to ease the pressure on manager Brendan Rodgers as they suffered a frustrating goalless draw with Crystal Palace at the King Power Stadium.

They’ve had their moments but have struggled to find momentum and stay in the bottom three, with the 4-0 win over bottom Nottingham Forest a fortnight ago seeming like a false morning.

It felt like a day when the first goal would be crucial and Leicester’s nerves were evident from the start with Palace pressing early on.

But the home side came alive as Harvey Barnes and Patson Daka worked together to break up Palace defenses before Daka forced Vicente Guaita into a smart save.

As the first half progressed, Palace lacked momentum in attack but provided a spark through Eberechi Eze, who flashed a shot from the edge of the box as the break loomed.

In the second half it was significant that James Maddison saw more of the ball but he missed twice before the hour mark, firing over the goal from close range and then wide after driving forward.

Very little has changed over time. Despite the introduction of Jamie Vardy and Kelechi Iheanacho, neither side was able to force the issue. That game was there for Leicester but their confidence eluded them.

Lack of penetration costs foxes

The stop-start nature of the game spoke volumes for both sides in different ways.

Palace first wanted to frustrate and counterattack by damaging Wilfried Zaha’s pace; They weren’t overly successful but it hinted at deeper problems for Leicester.

Nervous energy was everywhere in the stadium and given the Foxes had lost seven of their previous nine league games, that was understandable.

But it meant Leicester only attacked in spurts, with blitzes from Barnes, Daka and Maddison but never really enough to build momentum and win the game. Wout Faes, their only major signing of the summer, was their standout defensive player.

It was another long afternoon in a long season for Rodgers’ side, summed up by the talismanic Maddison, who picked up a booking for the simulation that will keep him out of Thursday’s game against Leeds.

Zaha on the periphery for Palace

Being substituted in the last 15 minutes while the game was still on the razor’s edge epitomized Zaha’s day.

There were moments for the visitors, with Eze being particularly busy in midfield, but they couldn’t find the killer pass to make the difference when they had the chance.

Zaha cut a frustrated figure on an afternoon he’d hoped to make a crucial impact.

This is Palace’s second consecutive goalless draw away from home and they haven’t done enough to take all three points again.
