BROWNSBURG, Indiana — Tyler Roahrig clinched victory in the sprint car from Pat O’Conner and Joe James with a last-lap pass Monday night at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park.
Roahrig set a fast time during qualifying for the 500 Sprint Car Tour event, starting 10th in the 30-lap feature.
Roahrig climbed to fourth after 15 laps and then passed both Armstrong and Kody Swanson to move up from fourth to second on lap 21.
The warning flag was waved on lap 23 when Doug Fitzwater spun at turn two, setting up a seven-lap run to the Checkers.
Billy Wease was on point after taking the lead from Dakoda Armstrong on lap 21 with a pass down the backstretch.
With Wease on point, he was chased by Roahrig, Armstrong, Swanson and Russ Gamester in the restart.
Roahrig looked into Wease on lap 26 but fell behind when the car shook at turn four.
On the last lap Roahrig had a great run off the backstretch and got under Wease at turn three to take the win.
Kody Swanson finished third followed by Bobby Santos III, Armstrong and guest NASCAR Champion Kyle Larson finished sixth.
It was Roahrig’s second victory in the 500 Sprint Car Tour presented by Auto Value and Bumper to Bumper auto shops.
“With two races left, I thought we’d be second,” said Roahrig. “I think the lapped car held him (Wease) and I did well on the backstretch.
“As I went into turn three I thought I was going to either spin or win,” he said.
Wease said there was nothing he could have done to stop Roahrig.
“I came out of turn two held up and Tyler had a good run down the backstretch,” he said. “Starting ninth and finishing second was a good run.”
Swanson said his Doran Enterprises-prepared car lost grip on the final laps.
“I gave everything I had to work my way up from eighth place,” he said.
