Kyle Shanahan is humorously unimpressed with Christian McCaffrey's flop against the Eagles – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

SANTA CLARA – Kyle Shanahan is impressed by almost everything Christian McCaffrey does on the football field.

Except one thing.

On Thursday, the 49ers coach was asked about McCaffrey's appearance on the “Manningcast” broadcast of the “Monday Night Football” game between the Seattle Seahawks and the Philadelphia Eagles and his star running back, in which he discussed his hilarious viral Fail attempt in win over San Francisco in Week 13 spoke to the Eagles.

“I saw that,” Shanahan said with a laugh. “And I thought, 'That's the only thing he hasn't done particularly well this year.' It wasn't the best flop. It can’t be that obvious.”

McCaffrey is having an NFL-leading MVP season with 244 carries for 1,292 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground. The All-Pro also caught 57 of his 68 targets through the air for 509 yards and another seven scores.

Brock Purdy didn't see the flop until it went viral on social media, but agreed with his head coach's assessment.

“That’s 100 percent true,” Purdy told NBC Sports Bay Area. “He does everything right, but he can't flop. It was still funny. I thought, ‘What the hell, that’s not very Christian.’ He doesn’t do that kind of thing, but it was funny.”

Shanahan doesn't mind the occasional flop because it could be beneficial to the team, but the head coach doesn't want something like that to become the norm.

“You want the boys to do that. “You can’t touch guys after the game,” Shanahan said. “Sometimes guys can't see it because it's so quick, but they can see the reaction, but you don't want to turn it into the NBA too quickly.”

Center Jake Brendel, like his head coach, saw the flop in real time and agreed that the flop was not the running back's responsibility.

“Of course not,” said Brendel. “You can’t build up the personality of being a tough guy, arming people hard and doing that. But that’s a good thing.”

If flopping skills were part of the MVP requirements, McCaffrey would have some work to do.
