SOUTH BOSTON, Va. – Bobby McCarty was declared the winner of the Thunder Road Harley-Davidson 200 presented by the Grand Atlantic Ocean Resort at South Boston Speedway on July 1 after apparent winner Carson Kvapil was disqualified.

After the event, speedway officials placed the race results on the unofficial status, as the post-race inspection revealed the items found to be questionable. After a careful review of the results of the post-race technical inspection, McCarty, the race’s runner-up, was declared the race winner.

Additionally, Landon Huffman, who finished third in Saturday night’s 200-lap race, was also disqualified.

McCarty’s win at last Saturday night’s event marks McCarty’s second win at the event in three years. McCarty won this event back in 2021.

“We never want to have to change race results after an event, but the integrity of our on-track competition is paramount to our operations and sometimes decisions like these have to be made,” said Jeff Bomar, competition director for South Boston Speedway.

“Racing is a highly competitive sport and with that comes innovation and trying to give teams every advantage possible, and sometimes that innovation unintentionally oversteps the bounds of the rulebook,” said Chase Brashears, general manager of South Boston Speedway. “We are extremely grateful for the professionalism shown by all teams involved in the post-race inspection process and congratulations to official race winner Bobby McCarty.”

Upon inspection, it was discovered that Kvapil’s #8 car, originally credited with winning the 200-lap event, had a left rear shock absorber that did not meet 2023 NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series rules. The inner piston of the shock was found to be non-compliant.

Huffman, whose #12 car originally placed third, had a rear case with camber on the left and right axle tubes, which is not allowed under the NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series Rule Book. The car was also found to have a left rear spring and shock absorber assembly that was non-compliant.

With Kvapil and Huffman disqualified and McCarty declared the official race winner, the official top 10 finishers are McCarty, Brenden Queen, Trevor Ward, Landon Pembelton, Jacob Borst, Mason Bailey, Logan Clark, Carter Langley, Brandon Pierce and Stacy Puryear .
