The Bears lost a lot of salary cap space this week by cutting safety Eddie Jackson. The Eagles lost a lot of salary cap space this week by cutting Kevin Byard. Now Byard could take Jackson's place in Chicago.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Byard visited the Bears on Friday. Because Byard was released, he can sign at any time and doesn't have to wait until free agency officially begins on Wednesday.
The 30-year-old Byard was traded to the Eagles in October and finished the season in Philadelphia, but previously spent his entire career in Tennessee. He is a two-time first-team All-Pro but is on the dark side of his career.
The Bears are near the top of the league in terms of available salary cap space and are likely to be takers in free agency. Byard could be a newcomer who makes a difference on defense before moving on to building his offense, with the cornerstone of that project likely being signing Caleb Williams with the first overall pick.
