Russian figure skater Kamila Valiewa has been banned for four years after her initial release for doping.
An investigation by the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (Rusada) found the teenager was “not at fault or negligent” for a failed test before the 2022 Winter Olympics.
But the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) upheld an appeal by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
News of Valieva's failed test only became public after she helped Russia to team gold in Beijing at the age of 15.
The ban has been backdated to December 25, 2021 and the Cas panel has also ordered “the disqualification of all competition results achieved” from that date.
However, the authority to withdraw the gold medal from Russia is “not within the scope of this arbitration and must be examined by the sports organizations concerned.”
Cas said Valieva, now 17, did not deny the presence of a banned substance and was asked to decide what sanctions, if any, she would face.
“Ms Valieva failed, on the balance of probabilities and on the basis of the evidence before the panel, to establish that she did not commit the anti-doping rule violation (ADRV) intentionally,” her ruling said.
It added that it had no bearing on “whether the athlete was an adult or a protected person” at the time of the failed test.
