Jump into action with a summer of sports and physical activity

A summer of free physical and sporting activities in Exeter begins this Sunday (15 May) with free badminton and walking sessions at the Wonford Sports Centre.

The scheme is being launched by Inclusive Exeter in partnership with Live & Move, Sport England’s local delivery pilot for Exeter and Cranbrook, to improve life by encouraging people to be more physically active every day.

Under the Inclusive Exeter umbrella, activities are run by members of various ethnic minority groups and associations and aim to reach people from these communities who may have limited access to sports facilities and group activities, or who face certain social or language barriers.

That day, starting at 3pm, will see the first sessions of the badminton group put together by Babu of the Devon Bangladeshi Association at Wonford Sports Centre. These will continue to run every Sunday and are already proving very popular.

The first of Exeter’s Inclusive ‘Feel Good’ park walks also starts on Sunday in the city centre. They last about an hour and are a gentle but effective way to exercise, get some fresh air, and meet new people. Just come along on the day and get involved. Regular Park Walks will be held from Wonford and St Thomas in the coming months.

Other summer activities include volleyball which takes place each week at the Riverside Center and is run by members of Exeter’s Afghan community. There are Zumba classes hosted by the Filipino Association every weekend at the Newtown Community Hall and women’s yoga sessions held every week at The Mint Methodist Centre.

All activities are free and open to everyone and are a great way to get more active, meet people and improve both physical and mental health in the process.
