It took Klopp a day to forget Liverpool’s quadruple woes – Sport – The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News
Jurgen Klopp said it took him just a day to get over Liverpool’s failure to win the quadruple last season.
Klopp’s side achieved football immortality in the space of two games, only to fall narrowly as Manchester City guided them to the Premier League title on the final day of the season.
Liverpool followed that near-miss and lost the Champions League final 1-0 to Real Madrid, leaving them with only the FA and League Cups as proof of their incredible season.
But Reds boss Klopp didn’t address that misery for more than 24 hours as he quickly focused on the season ahead.
The German has an early shot at a little revenge against City in the Community Shield at Leicester’s King Power Stadium on Saturday.
“It took me a day and then we had a parade in Liverpool and I was okay with everything,” said Klopp.
“Of course we knew it was close. When you are unlucky at moments, things like this happen. It’s sport and we accept the rules.
“One more point is enough after 38 matchdays, and one more goal is enough in a football game. We accept that too, so it didn’t take long for me.
“What was my conclusion of last season? I don’t think it makes too much sense to think like that.
“We played at an incredibly high level, we were consistent, we played good football – not always, but very often. We fought hard. Those are all things we need to repeat.”
Liverpool saw Senegalese striker Sadio Mane join Bayern Munich in the final season after six very successful years on Merseyside, during which he won the Champions League and Premier League and scored 120 goals in 269 games.
The loss of Mane is a blow, but Klopp has filled the void by signing Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez from Benfica and the manager expects Liverpool to make a smooth transition into the new era.
“Of course there was a small change in our team. We lost Sadio, who was in the permanent line-up for six years,” said Klopp.
“But it’s always like that. We can’t try to stick together forever. We have to make changes and when Sadio came and told us that he wanted to take on a new challenge because it was early enough (in the closed season) we accepted that.
“So we had time to prepare for this situation and we did. And now we have to find each other again. That is also quite normal.”
