Grimsby Town 1-0 Southend United

Ryan Taylor’s early goal proved enough for Grimsby to record a series of three straight National League losses with a 1-0 win over struggling Southend.

Taylor’s precise finish in the third minute after Erico Sousa’s break also ensured that the Mariners were level on points with Chesterfield at the top of the table.

Paul Hurst’s side could have contributed to Taylor’s early goal as the formidable Sousa blocked a shot before Harry got close to Clifton as well.

The guests, who languished just above the relegation zone with an away win all season, were able to limit the damage to a single goal at halftime.

And Zak Brunt missed a glorious chance to equalize for the Shrimpers late when he shot his shot over the bar and the goal was delivered to him.
