ANTIOCH, Calif. – Shane Golobic passed Chase Johnson on a lap 24 restart to secure his twelfth Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour triumph presented by Abreu Vineyards at Antioch Speedway on Saturday.
Golobic became the sixth different winner in seven SCCT events this season, aboard the powerful Matt Wood Racing/NOS Energy Drink/Southern Pacific Farms #17w mount.
“Sometimes it’s better to be second, but with all the yellow tones we could never really get into traffic,” Golobic commented on the front track. “Luckily I was able to time the restart and stay level with Chase (Johnson) and then make the pass through three and four. I want to thank my team for all their hard work.
“We haven’t won as much as we would have liked so far this year either, but we’ve gotten tighter lately and hopefully that’s a sign for the future.”
The main event kicked off with High Sierra Industries Dash winner Justin Sanders taking the lead. However, he soon had to deal with a very fast Johnson, who finally took the lead after a few laps. Several warning flags on the right as lapping traffic came into play opened up numerous opportunities at two row restarts.
Golobic managed to get past Sanders and secured second place on lap 10 before chasing after the leader. A restart in the 24th round initiated the game-winning move as Golobic slid to the inside of Johnson and secured the point.
Johnson stayed within striking distance but Golobic cleaned up front and accepted the checkered flag. With his twelfth victory in the Sprint Car Challenge Tour in his career, Golobic is expanding his record.
Johnson crossed the line in second, followed by Sanders, championship leader Justyn Cox and 16th starter Tanner Carrick, rounding out the top five.
