FORT ST. JOHN, BC – Kidssport’s Give the Gift of Sport fundraiser is well underway, aiming to get more children in the community involved in sport.
The fundraiser will run from November 15th to January 6th and the funds will go towards youth sports registration fees.
Byron Stewart, board member of Kidssport’s Fort St. John chapter, said the money raised stays in the community even though Kidssport is a national organization.

“We are based in Fort St. John and cover the entire area of School District 60. We fall under the umbrella of the Fort St. John and District Sports Council,” explained Stewart.
Once a need is identified through the organization’s application process, Kidsport can provide up to $300 in registration fees.
“For anything related to equipment, we refer applicants to Jumpstart because Jumpstart has the ability to fund equipment,” Stewart added.
“Jumpstart is also under the roof under the Sports Council so that we can all coordinate and communicate with each other. We don’t want kids to miss an opportunity.”
Stewart said the local chapter sponsored 79 children for the sport in 2019, but that number dropped to 23 the following year.
In 2021, the number of applicants increased again, 57 children got involved in the sport with the help of KidSport.
As of December 12, Stewart said they have helped 68 children get involved in sports in 2022.

To apply for a grant, a paper application form can be submitted to City Hall or the Pomeroy Sports Center. Applications can be submitted online or sent by email.
