A lonely walk across the gravel after being involved in a three-way fight marked the end of Sergio Perez’s title fight on Saturday.
The Mexican rider needed a miracle in Doha to keep his championship hopes alive, but a meeting with Esteban Ocon’s Alpine and Nico Hulkenberg’s Haas meant his Red Bull teammate lifted the trophy with a few sprint laps to go was handed over.
“I think we would all like to be in Max’s shoes today, but there can only be one winner,” Perez said.
“He drove much better than anyone else this season and deserved all the success. I’m happy for him, he worked really hard for this together with the whole team and he did it well.”
Perez, who won races in Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan this season, wrote on “We will give everything to see it through.”
