Estonian athletes win Peace and Sport award for supporting refugees | news

The UN General Assembly designated April 6, 2013 as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) to recognize the potential of sport to promote positive social change.

April 6 was observed for the first time in Estonia in 2017. Since 2020, the EOK has linked the day to a current event or topic since 2020. This year, the Estonian sports community was called upon to support Ukrainian war refugees in Estonia in any way possible.

As part of the campaign, a video was produced showing the message “#üheskoos” (together) on a white card by some of Estonia’s best athletes. Olympic gold medalists Gerd Kanter (discus), Irina Embrich (fencing), Kristina Šmigun-Vähi (cross-country), as well as bronze medalists Allar Raja (rowing) and Kelly Sildaru (freestyle) all took part, as did bodybuilder Ott Kiivikas, Nordic combined athlete Kristjan Ilves, sprinter Karl-Erik Nazarov and the Estonia men’s national football team.

Merili Luuk, communications manager at EOK, said Estonia’s White Card Day campaign had been praised by organizations around the world.

“It is really nice to see that our video brings tears of gratitude to the eyes of the representatives from Ukraine, but also from, for example, Great Britain, Canada and Rwanda. The EOK would like to thank all around 300 professionals and amateur athletes who took part in White Card Day individually or as a team and called for support for Ukrainian war refugees. Thank you!” said Luuk.
