Kobbie Mainoo had only played for England at U16 to U19 level before this international break

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo and Brentford striker Ivan Toney will start for the first time in England against Belgium at Wembley Stadium (19:45 GMT) on Tuesday.

The 18-year-old Mainoo made his debut as a substitute against Brazil on Saturday.

England have limited options deeper in midfield and coach Gareth Southgate pointed that out this week.

Toney came on as a substitute once for England and did not feature against Brazil.

Mainoo, who played 20 games for Manchester United in a groundbreaking season, was initially called up to the under-21 squad for this international window but was then included in the senior squad.

He came on as a substitute in the 75th minute against Brazil and Southgate said afterwards that he would be “happy to put him on the pitch at any moment”.

Toney, who has scored four Premier League goals in 10 games since returning from a suspension for breaching betting rules, made his England debut in a 2-0 win over Ukraine in March 2023.

Declan Rice says it will be a “pinching moment” for him when he leads England on his 50th friendly against Belgium.

The 25-year-old Arsenal midfielder has become a key figure for the Three Lions since making his debut in 2019.

He takes the captain's armband with him Harry Kane and Kyle Walker is out injured.

“On my 50th international match, it’s a great honor to perform in front of my family and friends at Wembley Stadium – I’m a bit speechless,” said Rice.

“It's a pinching moment, it will be an honor. I was absolutely at a loss for words as to when.” [Gareth Southgate] told me I would be captain.

It is almost exactly five years since Rice made his England debut against the Czech Republic after switching national teams from the Republic of Ireland, for whom he played three times.

In that time he has helped England reach the final of the 2021 European Championships and the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

“I have developed a lot as a player and person since I first came into the group,” he added.

“As time went on I played more big games, more games in big tournaments. I enjoyed every moment.”

Toney will be in the starting line-up as there are more and more absentees

England coach Southgate struggled with numerous injury problems during the international break in March.

Next to Kane and Walker Harry Maguire and Sam Johnstone are both out for Tuesday's game, while Bukayo Saka, Luke Shaw and Trent Alexander-Alexander Arnold are also missing.

While this means others will get the chance to stake their claim for this summer's European Championships in Germany, the circumstances are far from ideal for the England manager.

“It's an incredible number that we don't have available to us,” Southgate said. “I’ve never experienced this before, but it means there are opportunities for other people.”

“You can’t worry about what we don’t have. You have to move forward. There are many different reasons for these injuries.”

Southgate confirmed Jude Bellingham is fit after a cramp forced him off against Brazil on Saturday, while midfielder James Maddison and defender Jarrad Branthwaite will also be in action.

He added: “We're probably experiencing more players but that's really helpful. Seeing all these players against quality opponents will help us make better decisions going forward.”

England will wear nameless jerseys in the second half

England will play in the second half without names on the back of their shirts, with the game dedicated as Alzheimer's Society International as part of the Football Association's partnership with the charity.

The aim is to “draw attention to how people with dementia lose valuable memories, even the names of their favorite football players”.

It is the second time England have achieved this, following their 2-1 win against Switzerland at Wembley in March 2022.
