Oli Carter led with a career-best 113 as Sussex went 245-7 against Glamorgan after an even first day.
Carter, 20, had to work hard for a first-class first century on a slow pitch, hitting four shots after Glamorgan got the visitors batting.
He shared a century stand with Tom Clark (55) for the third wicket.
Andrew Salter (2-65) rolled a marathon 26 in the afternoon to keep a young Sussex side at bay.
Keeper Chris Cooke picked up a fine catch on the side of his leg and stumbled between his three victims before limping away with what appeared to be a cramp. Colin Ingram took over the gloves to reprise a role from early in his career.
Both sides were trying to shake off any hangover from Friday night’s shockers at the T20, with Glamorgan fielding a team long at batting and short of bowling resources while Sussex was still looking for a first championship win of the season.
They got off to a poor start after coming on as Tom Alsop fell to Michael Neser for six and in-form captain Tom Haines, on 10, edged James Weighell’s first ball to Cooke.
Carter and Clark looked in a commanding Century Stand with just under three runs and an over without much trouble before Clark chipped Salter for mid-on.
New Zealand’s Tim Seifert was beaten for five by Michael Hogan in his Sussex Championship debut and Dan Ibrahim was caught by Salter’s Cooke for a legside well.
Delray Rawlins hung around in a far from typical innings for 21 before being brilliantly stunned by David Lloyd by Cooke.
Carter steered Sussex to his first batting point but lost another partner to new ball when Archie Lenham Neser (2-39), who has been sidelined with Covid in recent days, came on for seven.
Homegrown product Carter pushed through the jittery 90s before banging Weighell through the roof for his 12th boundary to hit triple digits from 208 balls and cap a mature performance.
Carter and Henry Crocombe (18 not out) put Sussex within range of a second batting point going into day two.
