Cheese rolls: Competitors fall in the old “extreme sport”

While Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her 70th jubilee at Buckingham Palace on Sunday, a slightly different English tradition was celebrated on a hilltop in south-west England.

Competitors from around the world gathered at the Cooper’s Hill Cheese Roll to tumble down a steep 600-foot (183-meter) hill in pursuit of a seven-pound loaf of Double Gloucester cheese.

The old tradition of “extreme sports” experienced a comeback in 2022. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 and 2021 event had to be cancelled.

In the video at the top of this article you can see the competitors hurtling down Cooper’s Hill to catch the cheese, which the ` says can reach speeds of around 70 mph.
