Charlton Athletic produced a clinical show to see the 10-man Portsmouth at The Valley.
Goals from Ryan Inniss, the recalled Corey Blackett-Taylor and Eoghan O’Connell made the Addicks seven home league games unbeaten, their best home start since 2015.
Pompey’s Marlon Pack was sent off midway through the second half after a second booking.
His side have taken just two points from their last four games to lose ground in the League One promotion spots, while the Addicks are now just two points from the play-offs.
Portsmouth started brightly enough and Colby Bishop saw a powerful header from Joe Morrell’s cross, which was acrobatically knocked over by Charlton keeper Jojo Wollacott after just nine minutes.
They fell behind eight minutes later, however, as Inniss scored his first home goal since February and stood tall at the far post to meet Scott Fraser’s deep cross from a short corner and head in from six yards. It was the Addicks’ first set piece goal of the campaign.
Tottenham loanee Dane Scarlett saw furious appeals for a penalty after an apparent yank from O’Connell in the area waved him away at the other end, and just before the half-hour Blackett-Taylor, Addicks manager Ben’s only switch Garner slashed in from the left and slipped past two defenders before clipping a low shot just wide of the post.
He was on the scoresheet just 60 seconds later when Pompey lost the ball in midfield, allowing Charlie Kirk to play a perfect calculus pass to Blackett-Smith that kept the nerve to pass Conor Ogilvie and deep through his legs push by Josh Griffiths.
Pack curled a free-kick within inches for the visitors, while Jesurun Rak-Sakyi’s fierce left-footed shot before the break was deftly turned around the post by Griffiths.
Pompey manager Danny Cowley made two changes at the break but Charlton almost added a third when Blackett-Taylor’s sharp angle shot made a brilliant fingertip save against England Under-21 keeper Griffiths.
Pack saw red for a second booking with 25 minutes to go and the Addicks made it 3-0 on the resulting free kick while the unmarked O’Connell nodded from close range after another excellent Fraser delivery.
It was the 16th goal Charlton scored in seven home games in League One, while it was only Pompey’s second goal in 18 league games.
Griffiths was called upon to deny Alfie Morgan a fourth place late with a low save to his left as Pompey lost straight away games for the first time since February.
