Betsy Obaseki Women’s Football Tournament – Sport – The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

Nigeria Women Football League Premiership first runners-up Nasarawa Amazons of Lafia beat Benin City’s Brave Hearts FC 10-1 at the University of Benin, Ugbowo Campus yesterday to earn a place in the quarter-finals of the second edition of the Betsy Obaseki Women’s Football Tournament.

Theophilus Danjuma’s team led 6-0 in the first half after completely outplaying their Benin opponents. The Brave Heart team scored a consolation goal in the first five minutes of the second half to make it 6-1. The goal came from a penalty awarded by FIFA-rated center referee Olufunmilayo Alaba after a Brave Hearts forward was brought down in the penalty area on his first and only attacking move of the game.

That goal brought out the other side of the Nasarawa Amazons’ players, who optimized their offensive skills to score four extra goals and make the club the team with the highest number of goals scored in a single game of the tournament.

Forty-eight hours before that game, Lagos’ FC Robo had scored nine uncontested goals against Benin’s Brave Hearts FC in a Group A match. However, that record was broken yesterday morning with this new milestone from Nasarawa Amazons. A few hours after FC Robo of Lagos defeated Brave Hearts of Benin 9-0, Edo Queens of Benin defeated City Royaltoms FC of Lagos 9-1.

Also yesterday at Western Boys High School, Lagos’ Royaltoms FC lost 2-0 to Royal Queens of Warri to secure a place in the Quarter-Finals as second-placed team in Group B. In another game at Western Boys High School, Heartland Queens of Owerri defeated Osun Babes FC of Oshogbo 3-0 to secure a place in the Quarterfinals.

At the UNIBEN Sports Complex, Confluence Queens of Lokoja defeated Fortress Ladies of Benin 3-1 to secure a ticket to the Quarterfinals. The tournament’s founder and initiator, Betsy Obaseki, watched the cracker Confluence Queens versus Fortress Ladies.

Obaseki addressed the Fortress Ladies FC players after the game and encouraged them not to give up their efforts to build a standard football club, but to keep working to build an impressive football club worthy of emulation.

The four matches played marked the end of the group stage as the event moves into the quarter-finals to be played tomorrow at the University of Benin and Western Boys High School at Ikpoba Hill.

In tomorrow’s quarter-finals, Nasarawa Amazons will play Abuja’s Naija Ratels FC at 10am, while Edo Queens will take on Heartland Queens at 1pm at the same venue. Confluence Queens of Lokoja meet FC Robo of Lagos at 10am and Delta Queens of Asaba meet Royal Queens of Warri in a Niger Delta battle, all for a spot in the semifinals.
