The opening round of the FOX Australian Supercross Championship on October 7th at the Adelaide Entertainment Center was bolstered by the announcement of World Supercross Champion Chad Reed returning as an Ambassador for the Adelaide race.
He is also donating his name and support to the new 85cc class that will be known as the CR22 Cup.
Now based in the US but born and raised in Australia, the star is thrilled to be returning to Adelaide where he competed in his first Supercross race on an ’80s machine. With a passion for giving back to sport and a desire to help others achieve their dreams, the two-time World Champion will take center stage at the Adelaide Entertainment Center supporting the opening round of the AUSX.
“It’s an honor to return to Australia, to play a role in supporting the FOX Australian Supercross Championship and to lend my name to a race that meant everything to me as a kid,” said Reed. “Racing in the 80’s class was crucial to my career and I’m delighted that the AUSX events will give these kids a great chance on the main stage in 2023.”
“Kids aged 12-14 are full of enthusiasm and want to learn – the CR22Cup is a great way to support this age group and give them something to aspire to.”
“This is an important step in the evolution of the future of the SX – learning the right techniques early on is a great foundation for any rider and will help improve the sport in the long term.” The endgame is to create a trail for kids while supporting experienced, smart and confident Supercross riders who manage to take on Australia’s best and eventually make it onto the world stage.
“And I love that Adelaide can enjoy the first race. It’s a special place as it was my first Supercross ride on an ’80 machine – it’s very special to be back and to be a part of it.”
Championship Director Kelly Bailey reiterated that this class was reborn out of a desire to help young riders and ultimately create more future Australian Supercross champions.
“We were delighted to announce the return of the 85cc racing category at the 2023 Australian Supercross Championship and it’s even more exciting to have Chad back,” said Bailey. “We stand by our focus and commitment to nurturing young talent and with Chad’s name and dedication to the inaugural ’85 event it promotes class, provides opportunities for young drivers and has the ability to empower the next generation enable them to pursue their dreams.”
“At the same time, it’s extremely exciting to have Chad back at the Australian Championship – he was incredibly popular with fans across the board last year so we’re delighted to have him with us in Adelaide.”
