- I have a feeling Seiya Suzuki will take an immediate step forward if I ever give him up entirely, but as of this writing it’s not clear if he belongs in the Cubs’ lineup against righties. Maybe if he was better defensively and on the base paths. The Cubs have the newly acquired Jeimer Candelario
Now that they see the time, they might as well call Matt Mervis
play and call against right-handers Cody Bellinger
in the middle and Mike Tauchmann
right in such situations. They are not short of options. - The royals will have to spend the next two months figuring out which ones Drew Waters
Kyle Isbel, MJ Melendez, Nick Prato
, Edward Olivares and newly signed Nelson Velázquez are in the field for early 2024. Everyone in the group will have options, so it’s not like there are permanent choices to be made. Still, it would be nice to narrow things down a bit, especially if the team is looking to sign an experienced outfielder from free agency. I liked what I saw of Velázquez with the Cubs last year, but prior to this week’s trade he was disappointing in Triple-A, posting .253/.333/.469 with a 29% strikeout rate for Iowa. It still looks like the royals will have to give him a chance in the coming weeks, which would make things more difficult for Waters and Isbel. I’ve been waiting all year for Melendez’s excellent exit velocity numbers to pay off more, but it just hasn’t happened. Also, his strikeout rate, which was 24.5% as a rookie, is now 28.8%. Unfortunately, he hits like a catcher but doesn’t see time on the position anymore. Barring a major move at the Royals, he won’t qualify for 20-game leagues there next year; He has only played the position ten times. - My guess is that the Blue Jays don’t have any big immediate plans David Schneider
, but the 24-year-old is quite interesting. He’s capable of playing three infield spots (not that many shortstop spots) and the outfield corners, and he hit .275/.416/.553 with 21 homers for Triple-A Buffalo. I assume that he will be used in left field against left-handers. There’s a lot to be said for just giving him Daulton Varsho’s job, but Varsho is so good defensively and could have a hot streak here at some point.
