Alex Gilbey (right) returned to MK Dons after his contract with Charlton Athletic expired
MK Dons midfielder Alex Gilbey says the players need to take a “look at themselves” after seven games without a win in League Two.
After relegation last season, they are in 16th place in the table under coach Graham Alexander.
“It’s easy to blame the gaffer, but at the end of the day we’re the ones making the mistakes,” Gilbey said.
“I can’t think back and say ‘you know what, that’s a good goal we conceded’, they were all terrible and the boys now have to take it lightly, stand up and be counted, it’s doom .” or swim,” he told ` Three Counties Radio.
“It’s the same thing every week, individual mistakes. It’s just not good enough. The boys have to look after themselves.”
Gilbey was one of 11 summer signings from the Dons, returning to the club where he previously made 92 league appearances between 2017 and 2020.
He has been a consistent part of the team this season in League Two, scoring two goals in 12 games – but they have only won four of them.
“No longer nice, nice – everyone has their livelihood at stake. I don’t know where we are in the league, but it’s embarrassing,” Gilbey said.
“From top to bottom, as a locker room, as a unit, we need to fix and get this problem under control as quickly as possible.”
“We set ourselves a goal this season and we are well below it. This is not acceptable. The boys need to look at themselves in the mirror and say, ‘You know what, I’m not giving enough’.”
The Dons have three home games this month, against Barrow, Bradford City and Swindon, and their only remaining away trip to Accrington – all teams except Swindon, who are just a point or two ahead of them.
“It’s been a comedy of errors in the last two or three games,” said coach Alexander, who previously coached Fleetwood Town, Scunthorpe United, Salford City and Scottish club Motherwell.
“We’re getting into good areas but we’re not taking advantage of those opportunities and it’s difficult when that’s the combination.”
“We have to break through this, and soon.”
