A parliamentary hearing called for an investigation of the entire Canadian sports system

OTTAWA — Anne Merklinger, CEO of Own The Podium, says the organization would support an investigation of Canada’s sports system as a whole, and not just safe sports.

Merklinger called safe sport a “symptom of a much larger problem” in Canada’s sports system at a hearing in the House Committee on Monday.

She said the system was under-resourced and lacked leadership.

Canadian Center for Ethics in Sport executives Jeremy Luke and Karri Dawson and Sport’Aide executive director Sylvain Croteau also testified before the Canadian Heritage Standing Committee.

Like Merklinger, Croteau advocated looking at the entire Canadian sports system.

Former Sport Minister Kirsty Duncan is among those who have called for an inquiry into safe sport in Canada.
