DRIGGS, Idaho (KIFI) — Frisbee golf, or disc golf, is a fast-growing sport, and in the city of Driggs, participants in the sport have a new place to play a little closer to home.
Located in the beautiful Teton Valley, the new nine-hole course sits on five acres of land donated to the city.
Doug Self, the city’s director of community development, says when the lease on the land for the old course expired, many in the area spoke up.
“We’ve had a huge outcry from all the families and people who use this golf course,” said Self.
Self says the plaza was always packed thanks to a prime location near South 5th Street Skate Park, “which was one of our favorite park features in town.”
One of the city’s more enthusiastic participants in the sport, Philip Hornberger, says it was a collaborative effort between them and the city to devise this new course.
“It’s cool to build a whole new course and be a part of the layout and kind of like the stuff that we want to see out here and build to try and hopefully get more people over here and more people on board.” inspire,” said Hörnberger.
A process he says lasted much of the winter, “there were a lot of people out and I was walking through the snow trying to figure out where we were going to put the tees and baskets.”
Hornberger says the course is made for everyone.
“It’s going to be pretty family-friendly and anyone can play it. Not super difficult, but not super easy,” said Hornberger.
Self says the place should be ready once the snow stops, which should be in a few weeks from May 10, 2022. Once the course is complete, disc golfers in the area are hoping for an inaugural tournament to christen the new course.
