Many people have most likely heard the term “financial markets” before, but without a lot of context it can be difficult to understand what they are and why they are important.

However, they are fairly easy to understand and see their role in society. Here’s everything you need to know about the financial markets and why they matter.

How financial markets help individuals

The first question many people will have is how financial markets are helping me as an individual. Financial markets help generate revenue by promoting financial and economic activities which then allow individuals to invest their money in the related assets that are created.

Banks can also use these markets to borrow, which they then lend to individuals. These loans can then be used to start a business, buy a home, or whatever else a person needs the extra money for.

Another benefit that many may not be aware of is insurance payouts. Insurance companies use the revenue they generate to pay out insurance claims from individuals.

types of financial markets

Simple thermal financial markets are systems that facilitate the transfer of capital between those who have it and those who need it. There are several financial market sectors including stocks, forex and cryptocurrencies.

stock markets

The stock market is probably the best-known financial market. This is where companies list their shares to raise capital, and this is where individuals or other companies can buy or sell shares.

OTC Markets

An over-the-counter market is a decentralized stock market where assets are traded without intermediaries. OTC markets are much smaller; Therefore, they have a lot less liquidity, which also makes them less popular.

bond markets

A bond is collateral given to a borrower at a pre-agreed interest rate. Essentially, the bond market sells securities issued by the Treasury. For this reason it is also commonly referred to as the debt, credit and bond market.

money markets

The money market is described as trading in very short-term, low-risk investments. At the wholesale level, it is the large-volume trade between wholesalers and retailers. At the retail level, these are mutual funds and money market accounts purchased by individual investors.

forex markets

The foreign exchange market is another integral part of the financial market sphere. Forex is the process of buying and selling foreign currencies on a small or large scale. The forex market is also decentralized and includes banks and financial institutions worldwide.

commodity markets

Commodity markets bring together sellers and consumers to buy and sell physical commodities such as corn, cotton, oil and gas. Most of this type of trading takes place in the derivatives market and uses spot commodities as the underlying asset.

cryptocurrency markets

The crypto markets are among the newest as cryptocurrency in general is still relatively new. The buying and selling of cryptocurrencies takes place on decentralized trading platforms, with banks and financial institutions completely excluded from the process.

Why financial markets matter

Financial markets are important to a functioning economy for six main reasons; to facilitate savings, provide credit, allocate capital for productive purposes, facilitate transactions, provide futures markets, and provide a market for stocks.

The first aspect of financial markets is pretty self-explanatory, but providing a way to save money allows people to carry their money into the future. Without the means to save, you have no way of providing for yourself and your expenses when you are no longer able to work.

The provision of credit and borrowing is necessary for both companies and individuals. They enable businesses to thrive or individuals to purchase their own home. Credit and borrowing are necessary for growth at both corporate and individual levels.

financial markets

Making your money work for you is another part of the financial market. Instead of letting your money sit idle in a bank account, you can invest it in companies or stocks that allow you to monetize your money.

Being able to exchange cash for goods or services is a need that every business, government, individual and economy needs. A simple currency exchange is necessary for the expansion and growth of an economy.

Another advantage of financial markets is that they offer individuals and companies the opportunity to purchase a product in the future at a current price that is not affected by inflation or price volatility.

A market for stocks allows companies to sell shares and use the money generated from those sales to grow and expand. Individuals who buy these stocks can then make a profit as the company grows larger and more successful.
