US lawmakers ask SEC to halt Shein IPO over Uyghur concerns: report

US lawmakers have reportedly asked the US Securities and Exchange Commission to halt Shien’s planned IPO until the company can prove that it is not using forced Uyghur laborers to make its clothes.

Founded in China, Shein has since moved its headquarters to Singapore, but still manufactures much of its clothing in China. The company is known for trendy, affordable clothing aimed at younger shoppers, sold primarily through its website.

US lawmakers have reportedly asked the US Securities and Exchange Commission to halt Shien’s IPO bid amid concerns the Chinese fast-fashion retailer has been using members of the Uyghur community as forced labourers.

A bipartisan group of about a dozen lawmakers on Capitol Hill sent the SEC a letter requesting review, urging Shein to submit to an independent review to confirm that she did not engage in forced labor practices with the Uyghur Community, an ethnic minority, has been involved in northwest China, according to Reuters.

Founded in China, Shein has since moved its headquarters to Singapore, but still manufactures much of its clothing in China. The company is known for its trendy, affordable clothing aimed at young shoppers.

Reuters reported earlier this year that Shein was heading towards an IPO in the second half of the year.
