Some S&P 500 buying eventually surfaced, and even Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) gains didn’t start a significant move. This round-up of the four key ES_F levels for today is – I don’t expect any significant stock movement on this options expiry on Friday – that would happen next week and especially as we approach Jan FOMC at the more recently popular 25bps above 50bps according to futures markets.
Make no mistake, however, the headwinds will intensify as recessionary pressures intensify in the coming months. Consider earnings and profit margins in the context of strong labor and commodity prices (particularly oil). I stand by my claim that their model would require the Fed tightening into the 5.50% fed funds rate area as they redefine what a hawkish level is.

Gold, Silver and Miners

Similar to copper, precious metals hold up well. To quote my words yesterday – “The upper nodes may look intimidating, but gold is likely to hold up relatively well.” And it did and does, including the claim that silver doesn’t appear to be falling below $22.60.

Crude Oil continues to struggle around $81 – and is doing well there. Modest appreciation is expected next – the $88 area will be a tough nut to crack.
