Most Read Articles – Intel Foundry Services, EU Chips Act, Arm IPO

What topics will be covered this week? There are TSMC fees for its 3nm finfet wafers, the EU nears its own chip law, Arm’s delayed IPO, the semiconductor market’s decline and the departure of the president of Intel Foundry Services…

5. $20,000 for a 3nm wafer
TSMC charges $20,000 for its 3nm finfet wafers, DigiTimes reports, versus $16,000 for its 5nm wafers and $10,000 for its 7nm wafers. That it can get that price for 3nm depends to some extent on there being no competition. Samsung started GAA 3nm production in June, but yields are reportedly below 20%. Intel is on the hunt and according to Scotten Jones, “When Intel releases Intel 3 next year, they will have a foundry process that is competitive in terms of density and potentially leading in terms of performance.”

4. EU moves closer to chip law
Yesterday, the EU took a step closer to its own chip law when member states approved a $46.6 billion proposal to subsidize chip production in Europe. The next stage is to get EU ministers to agree to the plan when they meet on December 1st. After that, the European Parliament will hold a debate on the plan in the new year. The plan is unfunded as the European Commission agrees to pay less than 15% of the cost, with Member States paying the rest.
