The first Group 1 of the season was played and won over the weekend with Fangirl beating Randwick’s Winx Stakes and as Spring approaches I’m trying out some futures markets.

The Memsie launches in Caulfield in two weeks, so here are a few bets to take with you during Melbourne’s Spring Carnival.
Memsie Stakes – Valor ($26)
The New Zealand superstar kicks off his spring campaign at the Memsie and it’s sure to be a winnable race for the Vinery Stud Stakes winner. The stable of Roger James and Robert Wellwood sent them into the paddock after their Group 1 win in the autumn, with a focus on spring. Expecting Prowess to establish himself as a real weight gain star and paying $26 and $7.25 respectively seems like a silly price.

Manikato Stakes – Imperatriz ($4)
This is the best choice. World-class sprint mare who would be considered for Everest but trainer Mark Walker has made it clear that Melbourne Group 1 is the main target for Imperatriz. Her testing prior to her last campaign has been superb and she is already a Group 1 winner at the Moonee Valley 1200m after winning the William Reid Stakes in the fall.

Coolmore Stud Stakes – Charm Stone ($13)
That indicated a big spring ahead of her with some impressive jumps, and that led to race day when Charm Stone won the Quezette Stakes first. Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Rock The Law crossed the finish line and the pair left the rest behind while Sicilian finished in third place. The I Am Invincible daughter has only started four races now so has plenty of room for improvement and is already very talented – she will take a beating at the Coolmore.

Cox Plate – Award ($51)
I loved the Ed Cummings-trained mare’s comeback for first place in the Winx Stakes last Saturday when she was less than two lengths from Fangirl. Duais lasted to the 200 meter mark and crossed the finish line in 11.58 on the final furlong. He was only surpassed in the race by the winner and Montefilia. She was only great in her two winter starts after a break due to injury but seems to have returned to top form for the spring. Her top performances came in the 2,000m, punctuated by a comfortable win in the Australian Cup, and $51/$13.50 seem like major transgressions.

Caulfield Cup – Francesco Guardi ($11)
Another one from the Winx Stakes that was awesome. It was his first attempt at Group 1 level, so to finish strong, finishing just over three lengths ahead of some of our top performers by weight, is a huge credit. Chris Waller has hinted that Francesco Guardi is the perfect cup horse this year and judging by his first run he is right on track.

Champions Mile – Think About It ($11)
He’ll likely follow a similar path that Joe Pride took with Private Eye last year. Second in Everest after tackling the Premiere Stakes, then the Giga Kick Stakes and possibly Champions Mile. The sky is the limit for Think About It, the horse who kept improving throughout the Winter Carnival and the way he was so dominant at the Stradbroke Handicap suggested a mile deep in his preparation was not out of reach would be. Is Mr Brightside coming here? There is likely to be thorough preparation, with the King Charles Stakes and Cox Plate being the primary objective.
