Macro data, earnings, stock quotes are likely to affect the market

Macroeconomic data, corporate earnings, IPO market activity and institutional flows are likely to be the focus of Dalal Street this week after a week of aggressive central bank actions rocked global markets. LIC’s first share sale to raise up to Rs 21,000 crore – India’s largest public offering ever – will be in the spotlight as the bidding process draws to a close.

Earnings season will remain on investors’ radars as blue chip companies such as Tata Motors, Asian Paints, SBI, Bank of Baroda and Punjab National Bank are set to release their quarterly results.

It also closely follows foreign cash flows and news updates on the Russia-Ukraine war and rising COVID infections in parts of the world.

The week that was

Indian equity benchmarks suffered their biggest weekly loss since November 2021 in the holiday-shortened four-session trading week ending on May 6, falling around four percent each. That was their fourth consecutive weekly loss.

Concerns about worsening inflation and its impact on global growth caused jitters in global markets during the week as major central banks including the RBI tightened pandemic-era monetary policy.

All NSE sectoral gauges ended the week lower.

Broader markets reflected losses in headline indices.

index Weekly Change (%)
mid-range 100 -4.3
Small cap 100 -6.8

As many as 43 Nifty stocks ended the week below zero.

Hero MotoCorp, Hindustan Unilever and Kotak Mahindra Bank were among the few blue chip winners.

Along the road

“In the coming week, the market will follow the inflation numbers around the world. While the numbers will remain high, the chances of a major market reaction are slim as the impact has already been factored in,” said Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Financial Services.

He suggests sticking with sectors like banking, IT, pharmaceuticals and green energy.
