Like stocks, collectibles suffer from the end of easy money

Barron’s spends a lot of time charting asset prices — their up, down, and sideways movements, as the name of this long-running column suggests. But running heads aside, it’s often worth looking beyond Wall Street to get a real sense of investor sentiment. Sometimes the market’s most revealing moves take place far from the stock exchanges and have nothing to do with corporate balance sheets. Just recently, one of the most telling signs of a shift in market sentiment was a baseball.

A week ago, Goldin Auctions sold Aaron Judge’s 62nd home run ball for $1.5 million. This unique collectible was shot by the Yankees outfielder in the stands at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas on October 4, setting a new American League record for single-season home runs.
