What happened: Founded in 1995, Amazon went public on May 15, 1997 with an initial price offering. The company offered shares at a price of $18 and a company valuation of approximately $300 million.

At the time, the “leading online bookseller” had around 80,000 average daily visits to its website, annual sales of $15.8 million, and 340,000 customer accounts from 100 countries.

Today, Amazon is the fifth most valuable public company and Bezos is the third richest person in the world with an estimated fortune of $151 billion.

Although Bezos stepped down as the company’s CEO in 2021, he remains the company’s chief executive officer. He also owns a stake in the company and has seen his wealth rise with Amazon’s increased valuation. The founder recently took ownership of a $500 million yacht that costs $25 million a year to run.

In the meantime, Amazon has grown through new product offers such as Amazon Prime Video and Amazon Web Services as well as through international expansion. Amazon’s aggressive acquisition strategy has included high-profile purchases such as Alexa, Audible, Twitch, Whole Foods, Pill Pack And MGM.

The company could also have another growth sector focused on artificial intelligence.

Invest $1,000 in Amazon Stock: Investors who bought Amazon stock at the time of the IPO have done reasonably well, although they should have survived the dot-com bubble as well.

A bubble of tech companies, including many dot-com names, crushed Amazon’s peers and also caused the retailer’s shares to fall sharply.

However, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Amazon stock at the time of the IPO could have bought 55.56 shares based on the $18 price.

Amazon stock splits in June 1998 (2:1), January 1999 (3:1), September 1999 (2:1) and June 2022 (20:1) would have made AMZN’s 18.55 shares 13,334.4 shares today .

Based on Amazon stock being priced at $142.20 at the time of writing, the $1,000 investment would be worth $1,896,151.68 today.

Not a bad return on a $1,000 investment in an unprofitable online bookseller.
