No golf week on the calendar creates more anticipation and excitement than the Masters.
It truly is “a tradition like no other” as the entire sporting world will be centered around Augusta National Golf Club. Eyes are even wider this year as Tiger Woods’ potentially unexpected return looks increasingly likely.
The Masters will be viewed through an even larger prism this year as the legalization of sports betting has developed a keen eye for golf. I’m certainly biased, but it’s one of the best sports to bet on, with so many different markets to bring skin into play.
There are a few important ways to ensure you get the best edge available in golf betting, and that is what this article will focus on.
Shop for odds
I understand that many bettors do this casually and drop by to check out golf week, but I can tell you that there is nothing more important when it comes to golf betting than buying odds.
Very few other sports compare to golf as you will find different books taking different viewpoints on golfers for each tournament.
The difference can be huge in golf, as it’s not uncommon for a player to be listed at, say, +2500 in one book and +4000 in another. In this case, the $10 bet you were about to make went from a $250 payout to $400 just because you could look around for the best number.
No matter what you’re doing or how you’re playing this week, just be ready to shop around to get the best odds.
Quotas reset Monday morning
There are always futures markets for the biggest golf events, with all major championships being priced well in advance. Often they do not indicate the market to start the tournament week.
We saw a reset in the odds for this year’s Masters on Monday morning. At the time I had a list of players I wanted to buy.
The best time to buy into a player to win a golf tournament is almost always at the very beginning of the week when many are posting their odds without a real sense of the market.
Grab a coffee and get ready to shop for your boys when the odds are released on Monday and keep this in mind when it comes to major championships.
Look for weather advantages
As the week progresses and tee times are released, there are often weather factors that can help or hurt players with specific tee times.
THE PLAYERS Championship last month was a perfect example of that. The golfers in the wave late Thursday, early Friday found themselves in the worst weather as they headed into the cut. This left a large percentage of the other wave not only with start times in the later rounds, but also with a lead at the top of the leaderboard.
Many weeks there is no benefit to be found, but you certainly don’t want to miss it and find yourself on the wrong side of the draw. If you want to make last-minute bets, be sure to check the weather forecast.
Adjust live or between rounds
The golf match sweat is one of the best, not only for the storylines and potential for long odds wins, but also for the extended sweat spanning four days. There are many twists and turns in any 72-hole tournament, especially in the Masters.
If you’re not quite sure where to invest your money at the start of the week and just want to see some golf before taking a stand, this is a perfectly good strategy. Betting opportunities abound and sometimes you can take advantage of an overreaction to a bad hole or even a bad round earlier in the week.
We keep seeing where players start a week slowly but find their way to the top by the end of the week. Pauses between rounds allow the odds to reset and you can get in on someone you think might be poised to win at three different stages of the event.
There’s also a high probability it will be competitive with many players going into Sunday close to the lead and creating another spot for good chances if you have a player to tie to the win.

Use your resources
We’ll be covering you from a variety of angles throughout the week here at Action Network. I will reset my own picks and plays after each round while we look for bet value going into the next day.
While dates are somewhat limited for an event like the Masters, we have the tools to put you in position to thrive throughout the tournament.
Be disciplined
The harsh reality of golf betting is that it’s really, really difficult to pick a winner at every stage of a tournament. It’s a lot of fun and the payout is great, but you have to be disciplined with your bankroll.
The first thing to do here is to understand that a really good handicapper only hits a winner once a month. They also do this with a limited number of players and don’t spread their money across a ton of picks as that just dilutes your return on investment and makes it almost impossible to be profitable in the long run.
Keeping your money management under control allows you to enjoy one of the best sports for betting while at the same time having a chance to do it again at the next tournament or major.
